It's always prudent to check crime patterns in an area, but it's also important to know what you're looking at and what it actually means. Different jurisdictions map crimes in distinctly different ways and at different intervals.

Make sure you're using filters and appropriate zoom levels. Also, sometimes what looks like a criminal hotspot might just be a corner Walmart that reports every single infraction on its property. Commercial enterprises have varying policies on what and when to report. Sometimes you have to call the sheriff's office in the county to get more up to date information than what might be on a website.
